Modernizing a Nationwide Animal Hospital Network with Azure VMware Solution (AVS)

iLink helped the leading nationwide animal hospital network operating hundreds of veterinary clinics across the U.S. relied on aging on-premises ESXi servers. The fragmented hospital infrastructure caused maintenance challenges, operational silos, and growing risks to system availability. To modernize their foundation and improve resilience, the client sought a seamless migration path to the cloud without disrupting ongoing hospital operations or compromising patient care.

Client Overview

The client is a large, nationwide network of animal hospitals providing veterinary care, diagnostics, and specialty services across multiple locations in the United States. With oa distributed footprint and a growing portfolio of digital systems, the organization depends heavily on reliable, secure, and scalable IT infrastructure to support daily clinical operations and deliver uninterrupted patient care.

Challenges

  • Heavy dependency on on-prem ESXi servers led to hardware failures, capacity constraints, and inconsistent management across locations.
  • Legacy database workloads required strict boot-order sequencing to ensure software compatibility.
  • Uptime was critical, any downtime could disrupt hospital operations and impact patient services.
  • The client needed a scalable and centralized cloud architecture to improve reliability, lower costs, and simplify IT management.

Solution

iLink designed and executed a zero-disruption migration strategy using Azure VMware Solution (AVS) and VMware HCX to modernize the client’s infrastructure.

  • Two-phase HCX migration: Replicated VMs from each hospital’s ESXi host to a centralized AVS SDDC with no operational impact. Performed planned after-hours cutovers to ensure a seamless switchover. Application-aware boot logic: Ensured database-first startup in AVS for complete software compatibility.

  • Secure, scalable network design: Architected connectivity between hospital locations and AVS using Azure Virtual Network and ExpressRoute.

  • Centralized monitoring and governance: Implemented Azure-native visibility, logging, and policy controls for improved manageability.

Business Outcome

  • Zero-downtime migration of critical workloads from on-prem ESXi to AVS.
  • Significant reliability and scalability gains, reducing hardware dependency across sites.
  • Centralized IT management, improving operational efficiency for all hospital locations.
  • Preserved application integrity and performance, ensuring continuous patient-care operations.
  • Stronger cloud-ready foundation, enabling future modernization and cost optimization initiatives.

Conclusion

iLink enabled a seamless, zero-downtime migration to Azure VMware Solution, modernizing the client’s infrastructure and eliminating on-premise limitations. The organization now operates on a scalable, reliable, and centrally managed cloud foundation, ensuring stronger performance, improved efficiency, and uninterrupted patient care.
