About Our Client
The client is an American multinational engineering firm. It has approximately 87,000 employees and is number 157 on the 2019 Fortune 500 list. It is headquartered in Los Angeles, California, United States, with clients in more than 150 countries.
Challenge
The challenge of the project was to do a discovery project of the current App. And then, based on the assessment and client requirements, develop a future state of the App and create a migration plan & roadmap. Some of the discovery points were:
- Legacy application built using Ruby on Rails & ReactJS deployed on Amazon AWS
- Monolith Architecture
- The App was not using any of the modern design principles and cloud offerings. And to implement them, App re-architecture and rewriting were inevitable.
- App’s current architecture & design documentations were either not available or limited in detail
- Due to As-is cloud architecture, fees were high and projected to go higher
- System should be multi tenant
Solution
The primary requirement of the project was to migrate & modernize App in Azure to conform to client requirements. As part of the solution, we performed the following activities:
- Reviewed the App from the perspectives of:
- Cloud Architecture - Understood architecture in AWS, fallacies, issues, merits, and demerits
- Modules - To gather the scope of the project
- Front end code - To gather the scope of front end development needed in the new App
- Back end code - To understand what would be needed to rewrite the App using Serverless & Microservices architecture, APIs, etc.
- Reviewed the As-Is physical architecture on AWS and created a To-Be (Future State) architecture on Azure
- Reviewed security & networking elements, server and load balancing setup
- Created requested plans and deliverables
- Application components hosted in Azure using Serverless or PaaS offering
- Implemented Multi-tenant App for clients and database per tenant
- Migrated existing Web Application as Angular Application and hosted as Azure Storage with CDN
- Migrated API app services to microservice-based App Services using Docker containers
- Moved all files to Azure Storage Accounts
- Migrated Postgresql to Azure SQL with Elastic pool and converted the entire data framework to work with Azure SQL
- Implemented security using Application Gateway, Authentication, Firewall rules at Azure SQL and also using private vNet integration
- Used Azure Active Directory to manage AECOM users and End Customers.
- Implemented “Alerts & Monitoring” on various systems, data, and application metrics using Azure Monitoring
- Implemented instrumentation and analytics using App Insights
- Enabled smoother and automatic build and deployment using Azure DevOps pipelines, CI & CD
